ABOUT JANET KARIN, OAM
Patron of Movement and Dance Education Centre
Trained by Laurel Martyn OBE, Janet Karin became a Principal Dancer of The Australian Ballet. Retiring to Canberra she devised her own teaching system and trained many outstanding dancers, choreographers and teachers. She also commissioned and directed several award-winning works for her youth performing group.
Ms Karin has developed a series of secondary and tertiary dance studies courses, and lectured at under-graduate and post-graduate level with the University of Sydney, The Australian National University, and University of Melbourne. She has published a variety of papers and studies in dance training, dance education and cultural development, and has received awards for direction, teaching and services to dance including the Medal of the Order of Australia.
Ms Karin has designed and facilitated national and international courses, conferences and workshops for the dance profession. She regularly attends and presents papers at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS) conferences, and is a member of its Education Committee. Ms Karin was Chair of the hosting consortium which brought the IADMS conference to Australia in 2007.
From 1997 to 2001 Ms Karin was Assistant to the Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, Ross Stretton. She is now Head of Artistic Studies and Kinetic Educator at The Australian Ballet School.
